If you’ve decided to use garden pavers to spruce up your garden, you’ve made a great choice. Garden paving stones are a great way to add beauty, functionality, and safety to your garden. However, as you’ve probably realized, installing them yourself is difficult. You can hire a contractor, but this will cost you money, so if you can do it yourself, you’ll be able to only pay for the cost of the materials. Here are some tips to guide you when installing garden pavers:
1) You will want to install them during a time where there is nothing planted in the area that you’ll be installing your project. Whether it’s a patio, walkway, dividing wall, retaining wall, or some other structure, installation can be messy, even if you try hard to keep it contained. Thus, there can’t be anything in the area that you’d be upset to see destroyed or damaged.
2) Sketch out your designs ahead of time so that you’re aware how your garden paving stones installation will mesh with your garden. If you’re creating a walkway, for instance, you want to know where the curves and ‘stops’ in the walkway are. These decision will be based on the features of your garden you want to highlight. Even if your walkway is a straight, functional path through or around the garden, you’ll still want to be clear on the dimensions.
3) Put in as much effort as possible on installing the base properly. Don’t use concrete as a base, as it could have negative effects down the line. Instead, use 6-12″ of crushed aggregate that has been compacted, and then a layer of fine sand as a bed for the pavers themselves. The more time you spend on this step, the less hassle you’ll have to deal with down the line in terms of fixing and maintaining your garden pavers project.
